Hey everyone! So I put together some full album uploads (including an extra surprise) for this first week of Stoner Metal Saturday. Next time I want to have more uploads (this was so last minute!) but for now here are some of my favorite albums of the week. I went back and forth between a few different channels — hoping to discover more!
If you want to be featured in next week’s Stoner Metal Saturday, have your album on YouTube (not SMOD) and send it over to MFKNZINE@GMAIL.COM for a chance to be featured and reviewed!
This album is a whole mood for me… heavy with a slow grind and deep howling echoes. Grin is a two-piece psych/stoner/doom metal band from Berlin. Transluscent Blades is their second album and was released January 17th,2020 via Crazysane Records. I love how their sick and savage doom sound boarders on sludge with a little sweet stoner/psych spot in the middle. Ugh!!! The third song “Transluscent Blades” …#IfIWereAStripper. I’ve never heard doom with some bounce to it. It’s the kind of stuff I’d force my fellow black friends to listen to in hopes that they’d bounce to it too… especially this one.
I promised someone that I wouldn’t play with a Ouija… this doesn’t count right? Either way, this is another gem on YouTube. Clean female vocals over raspy stoner rock riffs, and occult themes… perfect! Doom metal meets occult stoner rock… these witches don’t sound dead to me! Drummer from Electric Wizard; Vocals from Psychedelic Witchcraft — this band is just getting started. This was only their first album together… pretty wicked.
This fully instrumental psychedelic rock album is fucking amazing. Really reminds me of a shroom trip (maybe that’s the spaceflower they had in mind). The Spacelords deliver an array of colorful riffs and mind expanding melodies (I REALLY need to shroom to this album!!!). I don’t know if this makes sense to anyone (I have synesthesia; music sounds like colors to me)… but I keep seeing (hearing) fractal lights when I play this album. I swear I didn’t shroom yet hahaha! In any case, this is a great album to throw on and chill to.
Deerlord! Or should I say… DEAR LORD!!! Not at all what I expected; this band comes from Santa Rosa, CA (not that far from me eh?). I’ve been listening to slow, stoney doom and then all of a sudden my face gets melted real quick. I encountered this band on my Instagram after the whole SMOD scandal broke and they had their music “removed”. This album definitely puts the “rock” in stoner rock music. It mellows out in different places, but still a good kick in the teeth!
Holy Goddess what have I stumbled upon? This three-piece doom/groove/atmospheric shoegaze metal band from the UK is blowing my mind right now. I never knew doom could sound like this. Released in January 31st, 2020, this is their third album in four years. It’s all so ethereal… the colors in the cover art directly reflect what I felt while listening to it. It’s like if the Beach Boys went mute and started doing their version of doom metal (not a lot of people know this about me, but I love the Beach Boys hahaha!).
This guy gives the term “one-man band” a whole new meaning. A little old school, a little new school — Phantom Druid is definitely one to watch. Hailing from the Netherlands, this one-man show is delivering raspy cult-riffs with Sleep-like vocals. Death & Destiny was released on February 14th, 2020 and is one of five records made by the masterful musician. Chill start with a heavy middle, and ends as a slow grooving vintage sound. The Nosferatu of doom.
Such a panty-dropper voice… if I wore panties that is. Void King is the stoner-doom metal band I didn’t know I needed. Coming from Indianapolis, Indiana they hit hard with powerhouse vocals and some beautiful doom melodies. This dirty southern doom album was released September 13th, 2019 and is the fourth of their music journey. I think I have a new favorite… one to watch for sure.
I’ve heard of family bands but this is next level shit. Greek Doom Acid Mammoth consists of killer father and son riffs mixed with a dark acid tempo and hypnotizing vocals. This band was formed in Athens and is on it’s second album (released January 24th, 2020). Heavy and slow…. just how I like it. I definitely want to hear more from them in the future!
YOB PERFORMS 3 SONGS IN AMOEBA GREEN ROOM SERIES
As a huge lover of Yob, I love this video soooo much! Yob performs three glorious songs live in a “green room” for our enjoyment (and theirs too!). It’s even more epic than the albums (I love live stuff like this).
