Happy Winter Solstice everyone! It’s finally officially Wintertime and I’m about to grab some ingredients for my gourmet hot chocolate recipe. But before that I wanted to drop some music on you so you can enjoy this day with me! Today is all about dark and magical music styles. I’m looking for songs that inspire and ground me for the upcoming season ahead. Hopefully they’ll work for you (and your ritual) too! Let’s go!!
INTECHNICOLOUR — ‘MIDNIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT’
One hell of a record! INTECHNICOLOUR is an alternative stoner rock band Brighton, UK and they’ve recently released their new album ‘Midnight Heavyweight’ just last month! With an experimental mixture of stoner rock, doom, alternative, and a dash of melodic metal INTECHNICOLOUR is easily a new favorite. The vocals range from dreamy to 90’s grunge/alternative, to doomy howls as the band switches up adding to the moment. EVENLESS — ‘UNUS DUO SEPTUM’
Another fantastic addition to the list! EVENLESS is a doom/sludge metal band from Semarang, Indonesia and their first official EP ‘Unus Duo Septum’ is just stellar! Released earlier this year, ‘Unus Duo Septum’ delivers deadly doom melted in with an Indonesian flavor that takes it to another level. The band EVENLESS makes me want more after hearing their three-song EP (maybe next year). I love how slow and deliberate the chords sound along with the longing, drawn out vocals. FROWNING — ‘OF VOID’
Let’s get a little darker, shall we? FROWNING is a single-soul funeral doom metal band from Dresden, Germany and ‘Of Void’ would be their fifth release so far. Luminous pulses leading you into a dark torture chamber of doom is exciting for the ears today the least. Blackened howls, with darkness drizzling over each strum and beat makes for a great record. GRIN — “ALTERNA)))” / “VOIDWALKER”
Talk about a “2 for 1 Special”! One of my favorite doom/sludge metal bands GRIN has unleashed not one, but two music videos recently! From Berlin, Germany, GRIN has consistently released the best, sludgiest doom metal I’ve had the pleasure of coming across. Their new music videos for “Alterna)))” and “Voidwalker” are both extremely trippy — but in different ways (you’ll see). BLACK SHALLOW WAVES — ‘FRAGMENTS AND WAVES’
Another one for the dark side! BLACK SHALLOW WAVES is a doom/sludge metal band from Lisbon, Portugal who has recently come out with their third release called ‘Fragments and Waves’. This would be another great recommendation for my black metal lovers! Harrowing vocal ranges and grooving blackened riffs make for a great combination. It’s not just sludgey, it has an abundance of rhythm that I could (and did) dance to.
