Hey everyone! This week’s waxing moon is all about gain. Gaining power, gaining vitality, gaining courage — anything you wish to manifest. And of course, in my humble opinion, music is always a great choice to enhance the mood! This week is going to be a mixture of stoner, sludge, and psych to get you going with your ritual or just enjoying the night. Let’s see what I can find for the last bit of the Sagittarian energy and the beginning of the full Gemini moon!
WITCHFINDER — ‘FORGOTTEN MANSION’
How ironic — a witch finding WITCHFINDER (nice). Starting us off we’ve got some stellar stoner/psych doom music from Clermont Ferrand, France! WITCHFINDER has been mystifying their listeners since 2017 blessing us with singles and EPs with ‘Forgotten Mansion’ being their second release of the year. ‘Forgotten Mansion’ can be described as a gateway to the new style of doom, but still connected to the root of its origin. The sanctimonious doom comes alive around the fourth song “Ghosts Happen To Fade” with their churchy keys and dark chords. Some sludge vocals flourish throughout, and the clean singing is more on the garage/sleaze side. The true beauty of this album are the levels of psych, sludge, and stoner metal that play out through ‘Forgotten Mansion’ — the perfect amount of everything creating a dreamy, yet dark atmosphere. OCRE — ‘FIRST EP’
Wow, another band from Clermont Ferrand, France?! Literally never happened before but here we go! OCRE is a heavy/alternative grunge band who’s ‘First EP’ has a chill psych-90’s vibe. The grunge gives it a vintage aesthetic. ‘First EP’ was released earlier this year, but you could swear this is from even further back in time. It’s the transportation to another era that really gets me excited for this album. Not to mention how chill of a record it is — something I could zone out to and relax but also get some energy as well. LOTUS EMPEROR — ‘SYNEIDESIS’
If you’re on the lookout for something more along the lines of meditative and trippy this is the album for you! LOTUS EMPEROR has come back from their seven year gap to bring us their second album called ‘Syneidesis’ . This band comes all the way from Athens, Greece and has a way of mixing heavy psych and stoner metal together giving the listener a mind numbing aura that channels a relaxing state. ‘Syneidesis’ sends a calming wave and decompresses the utter chaos that’s happening all around us. WEEPING ALTAR — ‘SELF TITLED’
WEEPING ALTAR is a BRAND NEW band from Toronto, Ontario who’s just released their debut self titled album only one month ago! The stoner metal sensation is very reminiscent of ELECTRIC WIZARD — that, mixed with a Rock n’ Roll/Psych stylized riffs. Their energy is cast through glimpses of “flower power-era” and new age metal music. The band WEEPING ALTAR has only two songs on their first album, but it gives the listener a sample of what they’re about — I can’t wait to hear more! SMOKE RITES — ‘TOTAL LUNG CAPACITY’
If you’re looking for some glorious sludge metal, you’re in the right place! From Warsaw, Poland, SMOKE RITES is an occult/doom/sludge metal band who’s released their second EP entitled ‘Total Lung Capacity’ (sounds promising). The haunting sounds really give me the (right kind of ) chills. Powerful sludge metal vocals bending along with a medley of gripping chords to create SMOKE RITES’ ‘Total Lung Capacity’. This is where you can really cultivate a mood as this album is full of howls and hellish sounds.
