Hey everyone! It’s been a very eventful week so far and I’m running myself a little ragged personally. This week I’m going to look for something chill, or something energetic — whatever I feel the mid-week vibe needs. Wednesdays are usually full of chaos, everything coming to a head-on collision. The moon is waning and everything seems to be draining. Well today let’s smoke up (sage or other things) and fall out to some new music! Let’s see what I can find for us this week.
EYE OF DOOM — ‘THE SAPIENT’
What a perfect way to start us off! Psychedelic stoner/doom metal band EYE OF DOOM has a laid back kind of vibe with their heavy but whimsical sound. Coming from Vancouver, British Columbia this band has been dooming around since 2018. ‘The Sapient’ being their latest release is their third EP and it’s a chilled out sort of doom — laxed but still menacing. EYE OF DOOM has a special way of creating an atmosphere of psychedelic darkness that’s soothing and translucent — a rarity in this genre. I highly recommend this album to anyone who needs to unwind and blast off with some heavy, heavy bud. With their garage-style psych and deep, wavy riffs ‘The Sapient’ allows you to escape into a void filled with wanderlust and doom. LUCIFERICA — ‘A CRUEL TASTE OF DEATH’
This album is definitely for an energy boost or demonic meditation — either way it’s a good time. ‘A Cruel Taste of Death’ is the fourth installment in LUCIFERICA‘s career and sets off an inner fire that extinguishes any dull or drab feeling. Dooming all the way from Buenos Aires, Argentina this sludge/doom metal band is a killer find with their heavy vocals and vengeful guitar playing. LUCIFERICA conveys a reckoning with one’s own demons and gives the listener a dark but vital spark. BURNING SISTER — ‘MILE HIGH DOWNER ROCK’
Let’s get all the way down. BURNING SISTER is a heavy psych/stoner/doom metal band from Denver, Colorado who’s debut EP came out in December of 2020. Their newest album ‘Mile High Downer Rock’ sounds like you’re staring at a slowly burning candle but you’ve dropped acid — if you know, you know. This album is great for a rainy night or thunderstorm when you just want to get high, and wait it out with some trippy doom. With ‘Mile High Downer Rock’ being their second EP one could only imagine what the future holds for this band and how far they’ll go with making their psych-doom sounds. CELOPHYS — ‘WULONG’
This album feels like I’m falling into black tar with no chance of escape. Cherkasy, Ukraine’s own CELOPHYS has unleashed a slow, yet unabating album titled ‘Wulong’. The doom/sludge metal band has been devastating the community since 2012 with their low growling, drop dead riffs, and a mean bassline. Their main theme seems to be “prehistoric caveman doom” with their album covers all being from the time and their music matching the vibe. BROKEN LOCK — ‘POSTMODERN SONGS’
A hidden gem if there ever was one. BROKEN LOCK is an alternative/progressive/stoner rock band from Črnomelj, Slovenia who’s been around since the 90’s! Crazy enough, their latest release ‘Postmodern Songs’ is their first album in seven years. With their sound being so hard to pinpoint, this has got to be the “proggiest” (that’s not a word haha) stoner rock music I’ve ever heard. It’s reminiscent of the original TOOL guitar sound, but mixed with other classic stoner rock riffs. VOID CRUISER — ‘CALL OF THE VOID’
A fiery way to regain some liveliness! VOID CRUISER is a psychedelic stoner metal band from Helsinki, Finland who’s been releasing music since 2013. The new album ‘Call of the Void’ is a beautiful mixture of heavy psych and new school stoner metal. Definitely different from what I normally hear, VOID CRUISER gets dark and heavy without being sludgy. ‘Call of the Void’ is right on the cusp of sludge but turns into stoner rock right before a growl would usually occur. However, just when you think it’s never going to teeter in the sludge realm they give us a little bit of howling demon action that’s just enough to satisfy the desire.
