Hello everyone! I’m super excited for this week’s Stoner Metal Saturday post! It’s definitely party time for me and I want to spread the happiness I have for my favorite day of the year. Since this Halloween is on a Monday, this is the best day to party and get wild! So to help you get in the mood for some frights and fun here’s a solid list of stoner, doom, sludge, psych, and fuzz! Let’s go!
GROUND — ‘III’
This is how you get ready for the night! GROUND is a doom/sludge metal band from Barcelona, Spain on their fourth album release. ‘III’ being from a series of full length albums, it’s unclear if it’s the final chapter but it’s very clear that the music has progressed and has become more defined over the years. Starting out in 2016 with their self-titled EP GROUND has always been influenced by other juggernauts of the genre such as ELECTRIC WIZARD, HIGH ON FIRE, and EYEHATEGOD. You can still hear a bit of those bands in their latest release, but at this point it’s all GROUND. The music is more like rock n’ roll went sludgy rather than starting off with edgy riffs and then adding the sludge/doom later. ‘III’ isn’t just doom/sludge, it has it’s melodic nuggetty center with their song “Desaparecerá” with guest vocals of Kimberly Vega (my favorite song on the album). I’m looking forward to hearing more from this amazing Barcelonan band! Check out GROUND‘s new album ‘III’ below and be sure to check out their other works on Bandcamp!
MOUNDRAG — ‘HIC SUNT MOUNDRAGES’
If you’re looking for a spooky, but religious experience this is the album for you! Perfect for a Halloween party playlist and for any day you feel like getting wild in your own home. MOUNDRAG is a progressive heavy psych band from Rennes, France and consist of two brothers and zero guitars. With a drum kit and a keyboard MOUNDRAG has a church-like vibe with a psychedelic twist. ‘Hic Sunt Moundrages’ — which is Latin for “Here are the Moundrages” — brings a ferocious energy to the party making it a must-have for your spooky night! Not only do they have this rad album released, they’ll be on tour starting November 3rd in Europe so be sure to see if you can make one of their shows! Check out ‘Hic Sunt Moundrages’ by MOUNDRAG below and don’t forget to listen to their other work on the official Bandcamp page!
MONSTERS FLESH — ‘BLACK MAGIC’
Ooohhh this is a spooky one. MONSTERS FLESH is a doom/sludge metal band from Spain who’s debut album came with the murky/rock version of doom metal. The debut album entitled ‘Black Magic’ has a strange and slightly sinister appeal with it’s deep, dragging riffs. Spanish band MONSTERS FLESH has a unique quality and can also be described as progressive doom. With ‘Black Magic’ being their first album I’m psyched to hear what they will have coming out in the future! Check out the new album by MONSTERS FLESH below and don’t forget to show your support on their official Bandcamp page!
BLACK SPELL — ‘SEASON OF THE DAMNED’
The new BLACK SPELL album is here! The Italian doom metal band known as BLACK SPELL has cast yet another deadly incantation with their third album called ‘Season of the Damned’. This album is an absolute staple for your haunted playlist — it’s dark, doomy, vintage, and straight up groovy. ‘Season of the Damned’ is a perfect combination of psychedelic doom and old school stoner metal. I always look forward to their album releases! BLACK SPELL has been casting spells since the pandemic of 2020 and has only become more powerful as a group. This is definitely one of my top doom metal bands and I hope to see them play live someday! ‘Season of the Damned’ can be purchased in various different formats on their Bandcamp page even though it says “sold out”. Their music can actually be purchased through the provided links under each type of item. Listen to the new BLACK SPELL album below and get over to their Bandcamp page to pre-order it!
PÁRAMO BONZAI — ‘KWANYIP’
This is a killer album! PÁRAMO BONZAI is a fuzzy doom/stoner rock band from Rio Grande, Argentina who has released their second album called ‘Kwanyip’! The hellishly delightful album is a fuzztastic ride through a spacey desert — ‘Kwanyip’ is a different kind of doom album. True to the dark tones of doom, PÁRAMO BONZAI also experiments with fuzz overtones and stoner rock chords. PÁRAMO BONZAI has been making music since 2019 and is on my list of bands to watch for! ‘Kwanyip’ is a perfect addition to any fuzz-lover’s album collection and anyone who needs some awesome music for their Halloween celebration! Check out the new album by PÁRAMO BONZAI below and remember to head over to their official Bandcamp page for more!
GALLERY OF GHOULS — “NUCLEAR PUMPKIN”
Let’s kick it up a notch (or a few)! GALLERY OF GHOULS is a death/doom metal band from Stony Brook, New York who’s main forte is releasing singles instead of albums (although there is one!) on his Bandcamp page. The latest one called “Nuclear Pumpkin” is an adrenaline rush of Halloween doom cross-bred with death metal chords and tempo. The new GALLERY OF GHOULS single is almost thrashy, the vocals are perfect for the song, and I honestly wish there was more Halloween themed music from the band. However, there are more than enough songs on the official Bandcamp page to be a full album. At one dollar per song, one could possibly make their own GALLERY OF GHOULS Halloween album out of those 25 single releases (hint hint). With titles such as “Horrorsaur” and “Dentist From Hell” it shouldn’t be too hard! Check out “Nuclear Pumpkin” below and get over to the Bandcamp page to make your own GALLERY OF GHOULS Halloween playlist!
CHROME GHOST — ‘HOUSE OF FALLING ASH’
Another cool band from my hometown! Sactown’s own CHROME GHOST has come forth with their seventh release called ‘House of Falling Ash’! CHROME GHOST is a post-metal/doom metal band from Sacramento, California who’s been releasing music since 2015. ‘House of Falling Ash’ is a gorgeous melodic doom metal record mixed with some beachy riffs and vocals that range from enigmatic ambience to low drones. Another awesome thing about this album would be the featured female vocalist Eva Rose from CHRCH (another Sactown doom band) on the song titled “The Furnace”. Check out the new album from CHROME GHOST below and be sure to head over to the Bandcamp page to purchase this album!
SHALLOW BLACK — ‘THE SECOND MANUSCRIPT’
Let’s get deliciously dark. SHALLOW BLACK is a heavy doom/sludge metal band from Alabama who only has one member! Their latest release ‘The Second Manuscript’ is a murky tidal wave of doom and feral black metal growls. SHALLOW BLACK‘s discography includes a demo, a single from said demo, and a cover of Kurt Cobain‘s “Something in the Way”. Along with dark wavy drones, there’s also a good amount of sci-fi — almost creature-like — sounds within the album. ‘The Second Manuscript’ has ghastly riffs and themes throughout the record, perfect for some Halloween fun! If you’re looking for something in the heavy doom realm, look no further! Check out the new record by SHALLOW BLACK below and don’t forget to get on their Bandcamp page to show your support!
