Hey everyone! Hope your local Apocalypse is going well! Right now I’ve got a special surprise for you. I was sent an email regarding bands with female members of this new 3-day desert-doom metal festival coming up this May (28-30) in New Mexico called Monolith on the Mesa — and I was blown away. These are all female-lead bands that I hope to see verrry soon at a metal show near me (…or NM?).
RUBY THE HATCHET – AURUM
This band has a chill southern rock n’ roll vibe to it. Aurum being their sophomore album, it shows more of their style coming to light. I feel like I could throw it on and do anything: smoke a bowl and cook some amazing food, get into a fiery mood for a wild night out, or …just add to my ever-growing “If I were A Stripper” playlist. It’s wild feminine energy. Raw and merciless while dripping with power. It’s definitely a good album for any femme go-getter to start their day with!
You can check out their other amazing albums here!
YEAR OF THE COBRA – ASH AND DUST
Ash and Dust by Year of the Cobra fucking slaaaaps… ugh that bass though! This female lead band is from Seattle and is way more into the grungey side of doom (go figure). Deep bass coupled with softer ethereal vocals in the beginning only to mix in with some punk rock pizzazz. I honestly don’t know how I’ve missed this band live… I swear I should have seen them by now! In any case, if you haven’t checked them out yet, I highly advise that you do! A few of these songs are going in my witchy playlist for sure!

HEAVY TEMPLE – CHASSIT
A huuuuge difference from the mentioned above when starting out. They rock with doom and roll with the groove of psychedelic sounds. This album is its own vibe… but always with that rugged powerhouse voice to cut right through you. The voice of a Woman with a capital “W”. I need to see them live as soon as possible! I can already tell how far down as how fast I’ll melt just from the first song. With this “take no prisoners” attitude and musical style — I can only be their prisoner.

PRISM BITCH – “TOO HIGH”
I think I was too high watching this shit hahahaha! It took a turn for sure. So last band of the list is Prism Bitch. This is a quirky band that gets dark and strange out of no where (like that one friend you have that’s probably a water sign). “Too High” was a perfect example of “that one band you never saw coming” at a show. At one point I found myself yelling at the screen “THAT’S JUST A BOX OF BLOOD! WTF?!” I like having reasons to yell random weird shit like that… this video gave me plenty of opportunities… too many in fact. Check out this video and others on their YouTube!

As for the festival…
Monolith on the Mesa will be held in Taos, New Mexico from May 28th-30th — TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE. M.O.T.M., a “High Desert Experience,” is an independent three-day music and immersive art festival founded by Dano Sanchez in 2019. Co-founder Roman Barham focuses on band booking. Both are Albuquerque natives. The festival takes place at the Taos Mesa Brewing Mothership, and on the grounds of Hotel Luna Mystica, just outside of Taos, New Mexico. The festival is focused on heavy riff-rock acts from across multiple sub-genres including stoner rock, heavy psych, doom metal, sludge, drone, and retro rock. The dramatic vistas and multiple stages along with immersive art installations set this festival apart. Attendees have the chance to enjoy all 40 bands performing during the three day event since performances switch between the scenic outdoor “earthship” amphitheater stage and the club-style indoor stage. Festival capacity is limited to 1,500 to provide an intimate experience.
